Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for an art Installation for Weston Museum
Weston-super-Mare Town Council is looking to commission an artist to design, produce and install artwork in the Weston Museum courtyard.
The museum is currently going through a refurbishment project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and there is a requirement to add an art installation in the courtyard’s impressive space to create that ‘Wow’ factor when people visit. The project will include working with a local secondary School on a mural project for the end gable wall to meet the community engagement required by the HLF.
The commissioned artist will produce works that utilise the courtyard, including the mural located on the end gable and the Under Croft space which leads directly off from the courtyard and which portrays the story of the coast line and the Weston’s connection to it. The artwork must also relate to the other exhibition spaces under development.
The artist will need to work with Imagemakers (the appointed exhibition designers), South West Heritage Trust (partners), Weston Town Council and possibly members of the local community on the designs before final installation. Conceptual development time and meetings will therefore be required.
The installation will need to be easy to maintain and clean and have an expected installation life of 5-10 years. The museum is scheduled to open in August 2017 but all works need to be completed and installed by the end of July 2017. Weston Town Council will then be the owners of the artworks, copyright will remain with the artist.
The project will be dependent on the outcome at an Arts Council England (ACE) Grants for the Arts bid with a fixed total budget of £10,000 (ex VAT) to include artists time, artistic development and creation of the installation. Submission to ACE is will start once the commissioned artist has been appointed. Once the application has been submitted there is a 6 week turn around from ACE on the outcome. If the ACE funding is not successful the commission will not proceed.
Artists are invited to submit an expression of interest, detailing a track record of relevant past projects, two referees (name, job title, organisation, telephone number and email address). Selected artists will then be invited to an interview and asked to present initial ideas. The deadline for the EOI is 18th March 2016 with visits to be concluded by 11th March by appointment only; Tel 01934 632575 and ask for Zoe to arrange a visit. Development of the installation will take place once the funding application has been approved.
Any travel costs will be reimbursed to those invited to an interview. Please send submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com.
Evaluation will take place during the project as a tool to report back to HLF and ACE on the final delivery.
