Well, that was an eventful weekend! Following on from our popular History Week event in the museum, we hosted a History Weekend on the beach lawns with the Hildsvin Vikings re-enactment group. We had a great day on Saturday, despite the rain; we had battles, ‘kiddie vikes’, interesting things to see in the encampment and were joined by some great stallholders selling nice items and refreshments. There are a few photos in a slideshow below, to have a look at the encampment, as well as the Viking battles.
Unfortunately, the weather was against us from the start and despite putting up a great effort to survive the high winds over the weekend, the Viking camp took a severe battering from Weston’s winds on the Saturday night. The beach lawns is not the most sheltered spot when the wind hits and a good number of the tents sustained damage. With the high winds showing no sign of letting up on the Sunday, we had to make the disappointing decision to cancel the second half of our weekend. High winds and temporary structures do not make a safe mix and with young families to consider, we sadly took down what remained of the last few tents standing.
The Hildsvin Vikings have been a great bunch and we hope to have them back to Weston in the future; keep an eye on our website and Facebook for future events.
