SUMMARY:Weston's High Street Community Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lance and Lance department store \nExplore Weston’s High Street in this community exhibition and remember shopping\, entertainment and leisure in the past.  The exhibition is a celebration of the High Street and will act as a legacy project.  It has been supported by North Somerset Council’s Heritage Action Zones. \nWeston has two Heritage Action Zones (HAZ) thanks to a combined investment of £2m from Historic England. \nGreat Weston Heritage Action Zone \nNorth Somerset Council was awarded £800k funding and Heritage Action Zone status by Historic England in 2017. It was one of the first places in England to receive this status. This project will end in September 2022. \nThe Great Weston Heritage Action Zone aims to: \n• unlock potential in town centre areas that are rich in heritage\n• to bring historic places back to life\n• to attract residents\, tourists\, businesses and investors\, and\n• to create economic growth. \nHigh Street Heritage Action Zone \nIn 2020\, North Somerset Council received a further £1.1m from Historic England when it was awarded High Street Heritage Action Zone status. This project will run until March 2024. \nWork includes: \n• engaging communities with the heritage of Weston through volunteering and stakeholder initiatives\n• restoring and repairing original features in historic buildings\n• delivering a comprehensive public realm scheme to enhance Station Road\, Walliscote Road and Alexandra Parade\n• improving the exterior of retail units through the delivery of a shopfront enhancement scheme\n• funding the development of training opportunities in traditional heritage conversation skills\n• delivering a cultural programme\, in partnership with Culture Weston.

The film is loosely inspired by the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning\, played by Kate Winslet. It’s is also suspected she inspired the tongue twister ‘She sells; seashells on the seashore’. \nMary Anning\, born 1799\, was a fossil hunter and palaeontologist from Lyme Regis in the UK. Her discoveries and insights contributed to the identification and classification of a wide range of prehistoric life and changed scientific understanding of the history of the Earth.  \nAs a woman born to a poor family\, she was denied fellowship of the scientific communities of the day\, her work often credited to the men that dominated the field.  \nIn recent years her story has become well-known\, particularly around the broader historic social injustices that her case highlights\, yet information and evidence about her is fragmentary. The handful of letters and notebooks which survive reveal the extent of her knowledge\, give glimpses into her state of mind\, and act as a stark reminder of her poverty and relentless\, solitudinous labour. \nToday she is acknowledged in the museums and collections that hold her work\, though often credited as a collector\, rather than as the field palaeontologist and scientific thinker that she was. SUMMARY:Home Educators Session - The 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Home Educators Session – The 20th Century \nIntroducing the fourth and final session in our ‘New Arrivals’ series! Over the past year\, we have been exploring different points in history\, starting with the Bronze Age and moving through time to the present\, when new cultures and communities have made Britain their new home. \nThis final session will explore a variety of different communities or occasions when people have come to Britain (or moved to a different area) and settled in their new location. We are currently confirming details with different groups\, but we hope to have a few members of different communities that now call Weston home coming to chat to us about their experiences. We will also be taking part in some interactive activities to explore the experiences of others and other people’s cultures. \nAttendees will be encouraged to continue their learning at home between sessions and the year will finish with a display of the children’s work from all of the sessions within the museum. \nSessions are designed to be active and accessible for a range of ages and abilities\, but are generally aimed at Key Stage 2 level. If you would like to let us know about any specific considerations for your children then we would welcome this\, just get in touch. Tickets need to be purchased for each child attending\, but parents/carers do not need to purchase a separate ticket (although they will need to stay within the museum whilst the session is taking place and are welcome to join in to support their child\, if suitable). Tickets cost £5 per child and can be booked via Ticketsource or by popping into or phoning the museum directly.
