SUMMARY:Wild Hares and Hummingbirds
DESCRIPTION:Wild Hares and Hummingbirds \n  \n  \nWild Hares and Hummingbirds\nBased on the book\, ‘Wild Hares and Hummingbirds: The Natural History of an English Village’\, by the naturalist Stephen Moss. Stephen is one of Britain’s leading natural history writers\, broadcasters and wildlife television producers. His book tells the story of wildlife through the seasons in his home village of Mark\, on the edge of the Somerset Levels. The exhibition brings together his celebrated nature writing with beautiful\, original illustration by the graphic artist Stephanie Cole. Stephanie is probably best known in the West Country for her striking illustrations that decorate the interiors at Gloucester Services. \nWild Hares and Hummingbirds: The Natural History of an English Village opens at Weston Museum in Weston-super-Mare on 18th May and will run until 18th September.

SUMMARY:Home Educators Session - The Vikings
DESCRIPTION:The Vikings weren’t just raiders\, they were explorers and amazing navigators too. Join us for a hands on learning session for home educating families to find out about Viking longboats and navigation methods\, as well as a game of Viking Kubb (a bit like a Viking lawn game!). \nThe session will take place out in the open on the beach at Sand Bay\, where will be using the beach environment around us to recreate the impression of sailing in a Viking longboat. Sessions are designed to be active and accessible for a range of ages and abilities\, but are generally aimed at Key Stage 2 level. If you would like to let us know about any specific considerations for your children then we would welcome this\, just get in touch. \nSand Bay is to the North of Weston-super-Mare centre. We will meet next to the car park that is roughly in the middle of the beach. There are other car parks at both the North end and South end of the beach too; the North one is National Trust and the South one is pay and display near the Commodore pub. The meeting point address for the car park is 4 Sand Rd\, Kewstoke\, Weston-super-Mare BS22 9UE. There is also a bus stop next to the car park. We will meet on the beachside of the road (in the dunes) and then move down onto the beach. \nPlease note that if the weather is unfavourable on the day then we will move the session back to the museum. Please be sure to include a contact number on your booking so that we can reach you on the morning\, if this is the case. If you are unsure about whether to travel in the morning\, then do feel free to confirm with us by phoning the main museum number. \nTickets need to be purchased for each child attending\, but parents/carers do not need to purchase a separate ticket (although they will need to stay with their children during the session). Tickets cost £5 per child and can be booked via Ticketsource or by popping into or phoning the museum directly. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Rosie Smith's New Book Launch! The Winter Gardens Tile Paintings
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE – this book signing has been cancelled. Signed copies of her new book will be available for purchase from Saturday 23rd October 2021 for RRP £8.99. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.\n\n\nIn 1990\, Rosie was commissioned by North Somerset’s predecessor Woodspring Council to create five large ceramic tile paintings for the new conference centre extension at the Winter Gardens\, Weston-super-Mare. The hall and the meeting rooms were named after Weston’s public parks: the Prince Consort Hall with The Grove\, Clarence and Ashcombe suites.\n\nRosie’s brief was to reflect the particular atmosphere of each of the parks\, together with tile signs for each suite.\n\nThe book describes and illustrates the original commission. It also covers the later removal of the tiles when the ownership of the buildings was transferred to Weston College (University Centre Weston) in 2016.\n\nThe tiles were professionally cut from the walls\, cleaned\, labelled\, packed in boxes and delivered to Somerset Heritage Centre\, Norton Fitzwarren\, Taunton for safe keeping.\nAt the time of writing several new sites have been identified in Weston for the tile paintings.\n\nRosie says: “It is my earnest hope that these pictorial tiles\, which form part of the town’s architectural and social history\, will one day return to Weston where they belong.”
