This talk will look at the Roman winter festival, featuring public holidays, role-reversal, and widespread merrymaking. Saturnalia was characterized by gift-giving, gambling, feasts, and the suspension of normal social rules, including masters serving slaves. Its traditions strongly influenced modern Christmas customs.
