“Memo of a Tea Epicure” (To Celebrate National Tea Day – 21st April 2021)

Tea is a part of everyday life for people around the world and has been consumed for thousands of years. The first records of people drinking tea date back to the 3rd Century AD in China. It is a beverage made from the Camellia Sinensis plant and is the world’s most-consumed drink after water!

In the UK we drink over 100 million cups of tea a day, totalling nearly 36 billion cups a year! Most of our tea comes from the plantations in India & Sri Lanka, where it is a big source of income for their economy. It is a key job market for some of the world’s poorest countries, particularly in the most remote areas. It plays a key role in reducing poverty & food scarcity in less developed countries. My country of birth, Indonesia, is the 7th biggest producer of tea in the world, but they mostly produce Black Tea.

Aside from Black Tea, there are over 20,000 different types of teas in the World. These are usually fruit teas & are not what might be considered traditional teas. Well, I never knew that. I learned in Britain that there are almost 1,500 different types of teas around the country. Most people believe that Tea is good for your health, it does not matter what types of tea; black, green, white, red or herbal.

Family Favourites

Our family love drinking Tea as well, but different members of our family have their own favourite teas. Out of curiosity, I looked into the cupboard where we keep our teas and coffees and I found that we have so many varieties of teas. I could not believe it, my husband loves green tea; Ginger & Lime Tea; and Spiced Tumeric Tea; my favourite teas are Indonesian Black Tea, English Breakfast Tea (only leaf tea), and my younger son loves varieties of teas such as White Tea – Elderflower & Pear, Lemon & Ginger, Peppermint, Jasmine Pearls & Green Tea.

I drink various kinds of tea at different times. I have breakfast tea with two sugars in the late morning, Jasmine or Earl Grey tea in the afternoon and Camomile tea at night before I go to sleep, depending on my mood on that day. If I feel a bit cold I will have Lemon and Ginger Tea.
